Expression of Interest - Commercialisation rights to sheep body conditioning tool
There are over 2 billion sheep and goats in global agricultural systems and the allocation of scarce resources are increasingly important.
The device as proposed will enable more standard assessments, improved rationing of scarce feedstuffs and enable better planning and targeting around animal performance, in particular reproduction. The device can be used to objectively measure the curvature around the spine in the lumbar region of a live sheep (either shorn or unshorn). Which results in the prediction of a body composition score for sheep.
Farmers use the technique to aid decision-making for future nutritional demands and reproductive outcomes. As ewes improve in body condition, higher pregnancy rates and more lambs born follow. The device will be able to connect to existing individual animal management systems such as electronic identification, performance recording and auto-handling equipment. The device is hand-held, directly measuring the surface of the sheep. Data is transmitted by wifi, can be transmitted by bluetooth.
