Tender Details
Ecosystems sustain human livelihoods and provide essential goods such as food, fibre, and services which can strengthen resilience. Healthy and functional ecosystems help reduce climate change vulnerability by mitigating hazard impacts. For example parks, street trees and vegetation on buildings can help keep urban areas cooler. This can reduce the effects of heat waves on our community and improve the air we breathe. It nurtures local biodiversity and creates more vibrant places for healthier living. Mangroves and dune systems can control erosion and regulate stormwater. This can help protect homes and infrastructure from storm surges and flooding, which would be exacerbated by climate change.
The NSW Government will support effective use of our ecosystems to reduce the effects of climate change through the NSW Climate Change Fund (CCF) Priority Area: 4.5 - Strengthen natural ecosystems to respond to climate change. This CCF Priority Area contains actions seeking to demonstrate and measure these benefits to catalyse further actions that build the capacity to adapt to climate change in NSW communities. By demonstrating the benefits of natural and urban ecosystems, we can encourage local communities to work with the natural environment to adapt to climate change.
The objective of this CCF Priority Area is to increase the uptake of green cover in cities and towns by demonstrating and measuring the benefits of urban canopy and green cover in reducing climate change impacts on local communities, health and wellbeing. The outcomes of this CCF Priority Area will be:
- Demonstration projects of best practice urban greening planning and implementation
-
Promoting greater understanding and awareness of the benefits of canopy and green cover, and ecosystem services
-
Support and development of services to assess, maintain, protect and enhance canopy and green cover in cities and towns
-
The development of local or regional canopy targets by relevant planning authorities to protect, enhance and extend urban canopy.
