The Newcastle station public domain construction project aims to deliver an iconic, high quality landscaped space that enhances the opportunity for The Station and provides a connection to Market St Lawn continueing the revitalisation of the former rail corridor.
The Scope of Works generally includes remediation, demolition, hard landscaping, soft landscaping and planting, signage, interpretive elements, services, stormwater management, and a period of maintenance. The works occur across 3 areas;
1. Station Plaza Area (Former Bus Depot)
a) Large paved area incorporating remediation requirements, providing flexible open space;
b) Landscape planter beds to provide definition to the site and soft landscaping;
c) Heritage interpretation elements such as the interpretation of the former gas holder and railway tracks;
d) Lighting & Smart poles;
e) Furniture includes seats, bins, drinking fountains; and
f) Signage.
2. Newcastle Station:
a) Removal of platform awing;
b) Services works as required; and
c) Removal and replacement of platform lighting.
3. Transition Zone (Market St lawn (MSL) Stage 2):
a) Pathways;
b) Landscapes planter beds to provide definition to the site and soft landscaping;
c) Turfing;
d) Heritage interpretation (e.g. railway tracks);
e) Aboriginal interpretation installation;
f) Smart poles;
g) Furniture (to match Market Street Lawn); and
h) Signage.
The design has been prepared to consider potential operational uses of the site, ensuring vehicular access is provided into and through the site in a safe and efficient manner and that flexible and accessible spaces are provided.
