The NSW Office of Environment and Heritage (OEH) is seeking an experienced research partner to investigate the role of NSW local councils and developers in driving the adoption of ecologically sustainable practice in the residential sector, above and beyond the minimum standards set by BASIX and other regulations.
This ‘Local Sustainable Housing Study’ (the project) will document and analyse Ecologically Sustainable Development (ESD) practice in residential developments (new builds and renovations) that are assessed by local government in NSW. The project will consult with a diverse range of local government practitioners and residential developers at various scales (small, medium and large), to meet the following objectives:
- explore the dynamics occurring between local government and developers;
- map examples of best environmental practice by developers and analyse success factors;
- capture and map examples of local government initiatives designed to improve residential ESD outcomes;
- establish a better baseline understanding of the key enablers and barriers to innovation in ESD practice at this local development level across NSW; and
- provide opportunity for knowledge exchange between key stakeholders.
The recommendations and insights gained from this research will inform the next phase of program delivery by OEH, and other CSHI industry partners, to support local government and developers to facilitate better ESD outcomes.
It is anticipated that the research project will start in May 2017 and conclude in 30 September 2017.
