Tender Details
The Department of Justice and Attorney General manages and supports 20 Aboriginal Community Justice Groups across NSW. The groups are located in a variety of locations including metropolitan, regional and remote communities.
The groups are made up of local Aboriginal community representatives who are subject to a criminal records check and subsequently appointed as official members by the Attorney General. The groups also include key government and non government services providers. Each ACJG has an average of 20 active members.
The groups are responsible for identifying key issues and factors that contribute to the over-representation of Aboriginal people in all areas of the justice system. The groups provide advice to the government on justice priorities within local communities and act as the key consultation mechanism for the government regarding Aboriginal justice policy and program development and implementation.
The ACJG coordinators are responsible for establishing partnerships between key justice agencies and the groups. The ACJG coordinators are also responsible for managing small projects that seek to improve justice service delivery and/or achieve crime prevention outcomes. The stakeholders that ACJG coordinators deal with are complex and diverse.
ACJG Coordinators are required to have a broad range of skills and knowledge to perform their roles effectively. Many of the Coordinators have limited experience working within government and there is a diverse range of prior learning, educational backgrounds and literacy skills amongst the Coordinators, therefore it will be critical to:
§ Maximise the use of graphs, flow charts and other visual tools to communicate information, rather than relying heavily on text and written materials
§ Provide opportunities for active and practical learning through role plays, group discussions and brainstorming sessions
§ Provide opportunities for problem solving, encouraging participants to use their own creativity and thoughts to solve common problems that they encounter in their roles
The successful applicant will be required to consult with ACJG Coordinators and Aboriginal Programs Unit staff throughout the development of the training course, to ensure that it is reflective of the unique challenges that ACJG Coordinators face in their roles.
The Department of Justice and Attorney General has completed a competency assessment to identify the priority learning areas for ACJG Coordinators. This information will be provided to the consultant to assist in the development of the training material.
