The state-wide public health commander training course aims to enhance the ability of senior NSW Health public health professionals to effectively lead field teams during responses to emergencies or major incidents.
Public health professionals are currently able to enrol in existing generalist health disaster education courses offered by NSW Health. These courses provide an important background in how NSW Health operates in an emergency response; however, specialised public health commander training is needed to allow senior public health professionals to develop leadership expertise for field deployments.
Following the recent launch of the online education modules Public Health Incident Control Systems (PHICS) and Public Health Emergency Management (PHEM) on NSW Health’s Gem platform, the Office of the Chief Health Officer (OCHO) is working to develop a specialist public health commander course. This course is for senior public health professionals and will build on the concepts presented in the two online modules. The specialised public health commander course will focus on the development of key public health leadership and risk management skills.
