Tender Details

Locomotive 3801 is listed on the NSW State Heritage Register. Due to this listing, the locomotive is subject to constraints on modifications and restoration work. New boiler designs will need to take heritage values into consideration and comply with expectations. The boiler is at present an all steel riveted boiler, with a three ring barrel. The boiler is originally from locomotive 3819 and dates from 1943-44. It was fitted with a replacement inner firebox in the 1980s and this has become life expired. As such, it has been considered that the entire boiler is now life expired and a replacement is sought. The barrel is a three ring, riveted lap joint barrel, 5 foot 8½ inches diameter at the smokebox end, with a steam dome part way along the centre ring. The boiler has a Belpaire firebox with 47ft2 of grate, 142 off 2¼ inch diameter small tubes, and 36 off 5½ inch diameter superheater flues. Inside the firebox are mounted five arch tubes to support the brick arch, and assist water circulation. A short combustion chamber was provided that extended into the boiler barrel. The regulator is a Melesco multiple valve type, fitted in the smokebox. The boiler is to be replaced with another boiler of identical appearance, although welding in place of riveting, and design improvements through Finite Element Analysis and Dynamic Analysis are both allowed and encouraged.
