TransGrid / Desktop Virtualisation Solution - Q61/11

Business Objective

The Principal is embarking on Stage 1 of a two stage project to virtualise a number of desktops and replace PC hardware with thin client devices.

The business drivers are:

·         to provide an enhanced desktop experience to users;

·         to reduce the overall cost of ownership of the desktop environment including onsite support;

·         to extend the desktop hardware lifecycle from 3 to 7 years;

·         to provide centralised management of the user experience, including automated provisioning and Move/Add/Change activities;

·         to integrate with Novell Identity Manager to automate provisioning of new instance provisioning;

·         to provide roaming profiles of user data, applications and settings across the network;

·         to provide equal or enhanced remote support functionality;

·         to be available via The Principal’s remote access solution, currently Citrix.

·         to identify poor candidates for complete virtualisation and provide a mixed environment;

·         to future proof the solution design to allow for access via laptop, tablet, and smart phone users;

 Overview of the Project

The Principal has established a project (Desktop Virtualisation Infrastructure – Stage 1) to implement a virtual desktop solution for 50 users across a small number of sites. The Principal will be responsible for delivering the communications infrastructure, server infrastructure, and users for acceptance testing. The successful Tenderer will supply resources to design, install, configure, test and commission of the solution, working with the Principal’s outsourcer.

While Stage 1 is for 50 users, the solution should be scalable to the entire desktop population (approximately 500 PC’s) and provide future-proofing for other devices such as laptops, tablets and smart phones.

It is expected that the project will be implemented by the successful Tenderer who is experienced in desktop virtualisation projects.

The project will be managed by the Tenderer’s Project Manager and will be delivered using the Principal’s project methodology.

The Principal seeks tenders for a fixed price, fixed time engagement.
