The NSW Climate Change Fund (CCF) was established in 2007 under the Energy and Utilities Administration Act 1987, and is now administered by the Office of Environment and Heritage (OEH).

The overall objective of the CCF includes to support programs that reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to strengthen the resilience to impacts of climate change, by stimulating investment in innovative energy savings measures and raising public awareness about climate change.

The CCF supports climate change response activities in NSW. This includes delivering successful on-going adaptation programs to assist different regions adapt to climate change, sustainability programs to improve use of water and energy, and programs to understand and plan for flooding and storms.

The purpose of the CCF, as outlined in section 34F of the Act, is to provide funding to:

  • Reduce greenhouse gas emissions and the impacts of climate change associated with water and energy activities
  • Encourage water and energy savings and water recycling
  • Reduce the demand for water and energy, including addressing peak demand for energy
  • Stimulate investment in innovative water and energy saving measures
  • Increase public awareness and acceptance of the importance of climate change, and water and energy saving measures

Extreme climate events, in particular storms and flooding, are known to have significant impacts on the society, economy and ecosystems in NSW with billions of dollars in costs annually. There is a need to understand and adapt to such extreme events in planning our future. The aim of this project is to establish an extreme climate events knowledge baseline and identify key research priority areas.
