Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water / Construction of the Upper Entry Precinct, Contract Package 2A, Taronga Zoo - C2009.003

The Works in this Contract (DoC ref. 0901179) provides for the creation of The Inner Plaza and the Outer Plaza. 

The Inner Plaza comprises:

§          A higher zone of buildings and paved area for primary circulation, information gathering and amenities, and directing patrons to the Zoo entry and exit;

§          A lower zone for passive circulation and recreation.

The Outer Plaza comprises the forecourt area, the Heritage Tram Shed and the various services in the vicinity.

The Works involves the following elements:

Inner Plaza:

·          Renovation, conservation and maintenance of the heritage listed Upper Entrance Building, including the removal of unsympathetic/instructive elements;

·          Conservation and maintenance of the Northern Perimeter Wall and construction of a facility building behind the wall connecting with the Sky Safari Upper Terminal;

·          Demolition of the existing information booth, café (former Koala House), Koala Encounters exhibit, Tasmanian Devil enclosure, former Reptile house, block wall and temporary shop in front of the Sky Safari exit;

·          Construct the new upper and lower levels of the inner plaza between the heritage entrance building and the water bird exhibit;

·          Construction of a new retail building comprising a café with indoor and outdoor seating and a retail shop along the foreshore of the water bird and dingo exhibits;

·          Construction of an entry/exit Node near the Sky Safari (Cableway) Tower 8;

·          Demolition and removal of the temporary access ramp adjacent to the Sky Safari Station at the western end of the Facility Building after completion of the circulation Node;

·          Construction of walkways and paths in both the eastern and the western end of the plaza;

·          Landscaping of the Inner Plaza, including tree retention and removal

Outer Plaza:

·          A forecourt to the Heritage Upper Entrance Building

·          Reinstatement of the heritage wall at the western end of the Facility Building after removal of the temporary access ramp using the stones and the records issued by the Principal;

·          Renovation, conservation and maintenance of the Heritage Tram Shelter for occupation by Zoo Friends and amenities for STA drivers;

·          Landscaping of the Outer Plaza, including tree retention and removal, and clear pedestrian circulation paths.

Tenderers have been selected through an expression of interest from the Department of Commerce’s Best Practice Contractor Accreditation Scheme.  Only the following tenderers are invited to tender:

Attendance of Mandatory Pre-tender Meeting at 9 am on 22nd July 2009 at the main heritage Upper Entry Building is required.

Tenders close at specified time and date at the Taronga Zoo Tender Box located in the Capital Works & Infrastructure Building at the end of Prince Albert Street, Mosman.
