The Male Elephant Holding Facility includes the construction of a new elephant holding facility (elephant barn, paddock and elephant proof containment) to house a mature bull elephant and two mature female elephants cared for by numerous keepers.
The Works also involve the design and construction of the handrail to be fixed to western boundary; piled foundation for elephant fence; roof restraint system for the elephant barn for use by staff to allow safe future maintenance of the roof and vine planter; portable and fixed ladder roof access on western side of elephant barn; the precast tilt-slab panels (including physical dimensions, lifting points and texture); the smooth riding trolley system for mechanically assisted sliding doors/gates/elephant restraint device (ERD) that can resist all possible loads exerted by a fully grown male elephant; the hydraulic power drive system including pump, cylinders and hydraulic distribution and control for the ERD; mechanically assisted sliding doors/gates that can resist all possible loads exerted by a fully grown male elephant; the irrigation system; and the sediment barrier on the western boundary.
The Site for the Works is an area of approximately 2500m2 contained within the existing Taronga Zoo. All parts of the Zoo surrounding the site will remain fully operational for the duration of the Contract.
The Site contains a number of heritage items, including a concrete moat and the existing 'elephant temple' which must be protected during the works. The Site also contains a number of significant trees that require protection and where shown on the drawings, relocation.
An 11 kV line runs from the Zoo substation outside the south-western corner of the site and in close proximity to the southern and the southern eastern boundary of the site as shown on the Drawings.
