Tender Details

Cemetery Trial Sheet Erosion Treatment at Katoomba.

Katoomba Cemetery was established in the late 1800’s.   It is an old cemetery with the cemetery infrastructure dating back many decades, including the drainage.  A number of problems have arisen from the drainage in this cemetery, partly due to aging infrastructure.

One of the issues with drainage in the Katoomba Cemetery is extensive sheet erosion.   This has resulted from the steep slopes in the cemetery combined with a highly dispersive soil derived from Narrabeen Sandstone.  This soil has lost much of its organic A0 horizon; it supports little vegetation, and is therefore highly prone to sheet erosion.

The sheet erosion is impacting on much of the infrastructure throughout the cemetery, including grave sites, as depicted in the photographs below.

Council is seeking a practical and cost effective method to address sheet erosion within the Katoomba Cemetery.  Council currently seeks to trial different stabilising techniques to assess their effectiveness, cost and practicality.
