Consultancy Brief for Hazelbrook and Woodford Creeks Catchments Mainstream and Overland Flow Flood Study.
Hazelbrook is located 93 kilometers west of Sydney and approximately 17 kilometers east of Katoomba in the Blue Mountains on the Great Western Highway.
Two drainage systems called the Hazelbrook Creek and Woodford Creek from Hazelbrook merge to form the mainstream Hazelbrook Creek before finally joining into the Grose River. Properties at Hazelbrook have been built on the “ridges” as well as the "valleys". Council's registrar indicates Hazelbrook (Hazelbrook Creek and Woodford Creek Catchment) has the highest flood related issues within the Blue Mountains LGA.
A significant number of flood damages have been reported across Hazelbrook during the February 2010 storm. To date there has been no specific flood policy for this area. Council wish to undertake a detailed flood study to understand the extent of flood problem and the flood risk in the study area. This Study will provide basis for subsequent Floodplain Risk Management Study and Plan in order to identify options to minimise danger to personal safety and reduce flood damages to property, and to ensure the future development is compatible with the flood risk.
This is the first step of the floodplain risk management process. A floodplain risk management plan will be followed once the flood study is completed.
