Tender Details
The Soil Conservation Service has been engaged by the department of Regional NSW Legacy Mines Program to undertake remediation works on the Lake George Captains Flat mine. The mine is located immediately west of the township of Captains Flat, New South Wales (NSW).
Mining operations (for silver, gold, copper, lead, and zinc) in the area commenced in the early 1880s with several small operations amalgamating to form Lake George Mine. Mining continued until 1962, when the Lake George Mine officially closed. The site is heavily contaminated with metals and metalloids (including lead, arsenic, copper, and zinc) and sulphur and has undergone a succession of remediation works since 1972.
The purpose of the proposed remediation works is to reduce the off-site risk of airborne dust and contaminated runoff generated from the continued oxidation of sulfidic mineral waste at Lake George Mine. The proposed remediation works are required to prevent serious environmental and human health risks to people accessing the site, to residents on-site and in the town of Captains Flat.
This strategy centres around provision of project site infrastructure necessary to assist in the rehabilitation of the Lake George Legacy Mine Site.
The operational phase of the project is expected to run for approximately twenty four (24) months, extension options of two (2) x six (6) months, weather permitting.
