Tender Details
The Ocean Trap and Line (OTL) fishery is a multi-method, multi-species commercial fishery that incorporates several commercial line-fishing methods to target demersal and pelagic fish in ocean waters along the length of the NSW coast. An observer program to sample catches from several of these methods (i.e. droplining, setlining/trotlining and handlining) will be undertaken for two complete years starting in September 2007.
Qualified scientific observers will accompany commercial fishers during normal fishing trips to collect a range of information. Data collected on each trip will include: taxonomic identification, size and fate (i.e. retained or discarded) of each organism caught; any interactions with threatened or protected species; and any apparent habitat interactions. Particular emphasis will be given to collecting information on the species, size, sex and reproductive status (where possible) of all sharks caught. Biological samples will be taken from each shark caught (where possible) for laboratory determination of age (vertebrae) and genetic studies (fin clippings). Operational data for each line-deployment, including fishing area, time of day/night, soak time and specific gear configuration will also be collected.
Sampling will be stratified into three regions: 'North' - Queensland border to South West Rocks (between latitudes 28 deg S and 31 deg S); 'Central' 'Hat Head to Sydney (between latitudes 31 deg S and 34 deg S), and 'South' - Kurnell to Victorian border (between latitudes 34 deg S and 37 deg 32'S), and temporally into four seasons per year (i.e. Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter). A total of between 12 and 16 fishing days (droplining - 4 days, setlining/trotlining - 4 days, and handlining - 4 or 8 days depending on region and season) will be observed in each region during each season.
An external contract will be developed with a third party via this tender process to collect and enter data for the entire North region, and for the South region between 35 deg S and 37deg 32- S, using protocols developed by the NSW DPI Wild Fisheries Program personnel. Tenders are invited from suitably qualified organisations for the provision of services in the completion of all scientific observer trips prescribed for those sections of the NSW coast.
