Museum of Applied Arts & Sciences
Strategic Procurement Outlook
Powerhouse Museum is the largest museum group in Australia. It sits at the intersection of the arts, design, science, and technology and plays a critical role in engaging communities with contemporary ideas and issues. It is custodian to more than half a million objects of national and international significance. The Museum’s responsibilities are defined under the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences Act (1945).
From 2024 – 2027, Powerhouse teams will be responsible for establishing and launching Powerhouse Parramatta, NSW’s first state cultural institution to be based in Western Sydney, opening and operating new and expanded facilities at Powerhouse Castle Hill, undertaking the revitalisation program, and launching the new Powerhouse Museum in Ultimo, the ongoing operation of Sydney Observatory and the digitisation of the Powerhouse collection. This level of activity and expansion is unprecedented in the museum’s 144-year history and represents a defining moment of renewal for the institution.
Once Powerhouse Parramatta is open, the museum will be responsible for the programming and operations of two world-class museums, a state-of-the-art collection storage facility and the historic Sydney Observatory.
