Tender Details
In order to minimise the risk of encountering a shark the NSW Government, through the Department of Industry and Investment NSW (I&I NSW), has invested significantly in shark research, in public education programs and manages the Shark Meshing (Bather Protection) Program (SMP) in NSW. The purpose of this Request for Tenders is to continue the very successful SMP.
The SMP includes a total of 51 ocean beaches from Wollongong to Newcastle that are currently netted between 1 September and 30 April each year using bottom-set mesh nets. Since it was introduced in Sydney in 1937, the SMP has been effective in virtually eliminating incidences of fatal shark attack at major metropolitan beaches, with only one fatal shark attack on a netted beach since the SMP began and no fatalities in over 50 years.
The NSW Government passed legislative amendments to allow the future management of the SMP to be undertaken through joint management agreements (JMAs) and an associated management plan (“the Management Plan”) under the State’s threatened species legislation - the Threatened Species Conservation Act 1995 and the Fisheries Management Act 1994. JMAs are a simplified adaptive management arrangement, and include independent third-party annual review by the NSW Scientific Committee (established under the Threatened Species Conservation Act 1995) and the Fisheries Scientific Committee (established under the Fisheries Management Act 1994).
This Request for Tender is to provide I&I NSW with shark meshing services that are consistent with the JMAs and associated Management Plan for the SMP.
