Tender Details

Hurstville and Kogarah Councils have a requirement to widen roads, three of which traverse over the rail corridor. These locations are Lily Street Overbridge at Allawah (Illawarra Line 13.560km), The Avenue Underbridge (Illawarra Line 14.280km) and Treacy Street Overbridge (Illawarra Line 14.605km) both at Hurstville.

The existing bridge at Treacy Street Hurstville was constructed in 1910 and the bridge has reached the end of its service life and requires replacement. The new proposed bridge is a single span steel concrete composite bridge that will incorporate four traffic lanes and two pedestrian walkways, one on each side.  Traffic conditions on the roads in and around the city centre have been operating at capacity during peak periods for almost two decades. Widening of the roads at these locations has been identified as a major traffic management improvement measure for Hurstville central business district as it should allow for a reduction in traffic congestion.

The proposed new bridge incorporates three traffic lanes and two 1.8 m wide pedestrian walkaways, one on each side. The roadway alignment is improved from that of the existing arrangement with acceptable horizontal sight distance provided to vehicles approaching from the southern side. The bridge now includes a single span crossing over the rail corridor which adds to safety as piers located within the rail corridor are no longer subject to failure from rail collision.

It is intended to have minimal disruption to road traffic during the construction traffic. The general concept behind the design and details for the construction methodology is that the substructures are constructed in short partial road possessions, the existing structure demolished, new footpath girders installed and opened to pedestrian and construction worker access.
